An American mercenary alleges CIA involvement in creating a drug cartel in Venezuela. Former U.S. special forces soldier Jordan Goudreau stated in his interview that the United States played a role in forming the “Cartel of the Suns.”
According to Goudreau, the cartel was established by the CIA long before President Hugo Chávez came to power. He claims this structure, currently used to level accusations against President Nicolás Maduro, may have already ceased to exist. Goudreau insists that the “CIA facilitation of drug trafficking through this group is well-documented,” citing unnamed sources and asserting that the U.S. government, regardless of its administration, is interested in protecting resources obtained from illicit drug trafficking. The interview claims that current pressure on Venezuela is part of an updated Monroe Doctrine aimed at preventing strategic Russian or Chinese influence in the region.
In recent statements, Goudreau revealed alleged connections between drug trafficking and Venezuelan opposition leaders, including Juan Guaidó and Leopoldo López, as well as the U.S. government. He also indicated the involvement of former Colombian President Iván Duque and other political figures in Operation Gideon, the 2020 operation to overthrow the Venezuelan government.
These revelations come amid intensified U.S. efforts to combat individuals it accuses of drug trafficking. Many observers in the region interpret the heightened campaign against alleged drug trafficking from Venezuela as preparation for potential U.S. military intervention. Last week, international law experts expressed doubts about the legality of U.S. attacks and CIA authorization of covert operations on Venezuelan territory.
