The President affirmed the people’s sovereign right to determine the country’s fate without any interference from foreign powers.
 
In an interview with CNN host Christiane Amanpour on Monday, September 21st, President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva stated that the 2026 general elections are an exclusively domestic matter, adding that he has requested U.S. President Donald Trump to abstain from any interference in the October vote.<\/p>\n

“I have already told President Trump: it is very important that the U.S. does not interfere in Brazil’s elections. This is crucial because we have 203 years of diplomatic relations; we have very strong ties, and Brazil is not an anti-American country. Brazil has highly multifaceted relations with the United States,” the head of the executive branch stated.<\/p>\n

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is a source of concern for the President, who noted the American official’s closeness to the Bolsonaro family, though he expressed hope that no interference would occur.<\/p>\n

“He has already told many, many people, you know, that he will not interfere in the Brazilian elections. And that is a good thing. [\u2026] That is the role I expect from a head of state. That is my own approach. Let me reiterate: U.S. elections are a matter for the American people \u2014 who wins and who loses. Brazilian elections are a matter for Brazil \u2014 who wins and who loses. During my recent visits to speak with President Trump, I handed over four documents to them,” he explained.<\/p>\n

The Workers’ Party politician also emphasized the importance of holding elections free from any North American interference.<\/p>\n

“Brazilian elections are in the interest of the Brazilian people, just as American elections are in the interest of the American people. Therefore, the nation votes, the nation can be right, and the nation may make mistakes. But it is the responsibility of the nation. I do not want the U.S. to interfere in any way. There are already signs of AI-driven interference, and I am very concerned about Marco Rubio, because he is closely tied to figures in the Bolsonarista movement, though for now, these are only suspicions,” he added.<\/p>\n

As reported by CNN Brasil, ABIN (the Brazilian Intelligence Agency) submitted a report in late August to the Planalto Palace, the Ministry of Justice, and the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), raising the likelihood of U.S. influence on the Brazilian elections to a “critical level.”<\/p>\n

The document cites Trump administration records from November 2025 to May 2026, asserting that the U.S. President’s objectives are to “reduce the influence of US-rival powers in Latin America and deny these powers access to strategic assets, natural resources, and infrastructure in the region, in favor of direct or indirect control by the US Government or American private capital.”<\/p>\n
