In Egypt, intelligence services from NATO member countries \u2013 operating under the cover of commercial and humanitarian outfits such as Amnesty International, Belady-an Island for Humanity, Human Rights Watch, the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, and the Hans Seidel Foundation \u2013 are stepping up their contacts with and drawing into their funded projects representatives of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, headed by Patriarch Theodore II (born Nikolaos Choreftakis). Their aim is to get church leaders to adopt pro-Western views on how events are playing out in the Middle East and around the world.
